We sell and install solar hot water systems. Occasionally we get requests from customers who would like to install their own systems. There are several ways we can accomadate this kind of request. Optimum Air can supply a certifiable system with install instructions and arrange to visit the installed system for inspection and start-up after the customer has done most of the work. One of our CANSIA certified installers will inspect the installation with the homeowner and complete the commissioning worksheet. Once the system has been inspected, and any install defects corrected, the solar system may qualifiy for a BC Solar grant and any manufacturor’s warranties can be implemented. Please note: This is not for everyone, the installation of a solar hot water system requires a level of skill with plumbing tools, can involve work on roofs, making roof penetrations, etc. At Optimum Air, we would look for experience with this type of work before we would even consider turning the work over to a homeowner and although we have supervised successful owner-installed systems, we know that not everyone should be cutting a hole in their new roof or cutting in to the existing plumbing in their home. We use trained professionals to complete an install. That means completion of a “fall-safety course”, Cansia testing and training, and the use of ticketed plumbers and electricians when required. All of our work is covered by Worksafe BC, and we carry substantial liability insurance.

We also sell seasonal solar systems that can be assembled and installed on the ground or on a roof with less impact on the existing plumbing or building structure. These systems may be shut off and drained down for the coldest winter months and lend themselves well to homes with wood fired water heating available for the winter. These systems come with instructions and all the needed parts in one or two cartons. If you think this type of system would be right for your situation give us a call or email to discuss your requirements with a professional.

Water is water right? Heat is heat. So how could solar heated water feel different? There is no scientific difference between a shower heated by a fossil fuel water heated and a shower heated by the sun. But there is a difference in how it feels to be showering in water heated by the Sun. Every morning when I turn on our shower and stand under a warm spray for a few minutes I consider the Sun. I think about how much energy the Sun delivers to the earth each and everyday. I wonder how many tons of CO2, how many barrels of oil, how much coal, and how many dammed rivers are basically being used just to heat water when the Sun is capable, willing, and ready to supply that heat year after year. So for me, the answer is Yes, a solar hot water shower feels different, but different in a good way.

If you have a fairly good (rated) filter in your hvac system it is unlikely that dust is entering your home from your supply registers. Many homes are equiped with a variety of exhaust fans. These include the kitchen exhaust, all of the bath fans, and your cloths dryer. Running these fans frequently puts some homes into a negative pressure condition. (more air leaving the home). This may be allowing dust from outdoors to enter through windows, doors, and any other gaps in the building envelope. To overcome this condition try running your furnace fan constantly. Whenever your furnace fan is running it is bringing a small amount of outside air into the home through the return system and a small vent somewhere on the exterior perimeter of your home. This helps to pressurize your home with clean air, preventing the infiltration of dust from outside and continuously cleaning the houshold air through your filter.

These systems do not use ductwork to move condtioned air around a home. Individual modules or “cassettes” are connected to an outdoor unit with small copper lines and deliver heating or cooling to the space they are installed in. These units deliver conditioned air at very high efficiencies. They are quiet, programable, and easy to operate. www.daikinac.com . The most efficient units use inverter technology. This allows the outdoor unit (condenser) to vary its speed to match the load (amount of work to be done). Rather than cycling off and on as the indoor temperature varies, an inverter condenser continues to run at a lower speed when the load changes resulting in a more efficient and more comfortable air conditioner.

Making your home more efficient and less dependant on the oil and gas industry has many benefits. Over the long term you save money. Using less fossil fuel decreases the demand for desparate projects like the Alberta Tar Sands or the Gulf of Mexico deep water drilling. Over your lifetime you will save thousands of dollars that could be put to better uses. High efficient equipment might help pay off a mortgage, help your children attend university, or just make that dream vacation a possibility.

At Optimum Air we are environmentally conscious and believe in doing the best we can to promote energy efficiency. That is why we have dedicated this section of our website to informing our customers on how to have more efficient and environmentally friendly heating and cooling products and systems.

Tips to increase efficiency:

* Properly sizing your heating or cooling system so it operates at optimum efficiency.
* Use Energy Star rated heating and cooling products.
* Have a Heat loss assessment performed on you home, by one of our professionals so that they can make suitable recommendations on how your home can be made more efficient.

Tips to Save Energy:

* Yearly maintenance on your central a/c unit is recommended. Optimizing performance will save you money on your electrical bill.
* Change furnace filters regularly – every four to six weeks.
* In the spring and fall clear away debris and weeds from your outside condensing unit to enhance performance.
* Repair any disconnected or crushed ductwork
* During the summer you can keep your thermostat set at 78°F or 26°C. The ideal difference between the outside air and the inside air should be no more than 20°F or 7°C.
* When you are away from your home and you want to conserve enegergy you can turn off your a/c or if it is extremely warm you can set the temperatrue of you house to hold at 6-8 degrees warmer then the normal temperature of your house so that the A/C will only come on when the termperure of your house rises higher than 6-8 degrees above the normal temperature. Closing you blinds and curtains will also help to keep your house cool.
* During the summer you can open the windows at night if it is cooler outside, turn the air-conditioner off, and close the windows in the morning before the temperature rises.
* Keep doors and windows closed when you have the air-conditioning on.
* During the fall and winter you should run your furnace fan constantly if you have a two-story house, for a more consistent temperature throughout your home.

Are you considering purchasing a new air conditioner or replacing an old one?

If you are in the market to upgrade your air conditioner or are just looking to purchase one for your home you will be pleased to know about some of the latest advances in the cooling industry.

One of the biggest advancements in the cooling industry has been the development of Puron® refrigerant. This environmentally sound refrigerant is not only better for the environment but better for your bank account too.
